The cloth feature that comes with MOCCA 2 in CINEMA 4D R9 offers a wide range of possibilites. One situation that will often occur is that you need two cloth items to interact. This tutorial will show you how to solve this.

 
There are two general situations.

 
1. Both cloth items will deform and react on one another.
This can be a long cape and a skirt.

2. One cloth item will only deformed the other, but will not be deformed by it.
Think of a loose jacket and a trouser here, the trouser will not be influenced by the jacket.

The first scenario can only be solved when both items are part of the same polygon object. If you want to give the items different cloth properties you have to do so by using vertex maps. Texturing will have to be done via polygon selections. In the file scenario1.c4d you will find an example where two items of cloth are made one polygon object, so the can interact. In scenario1a.c4d you will find a very similar file, but with a weightmap used to assign different masses to the items.

 
Using a weightmap to control the mass

 
Note: To make the control of properites via weightmaps usefull the default value has to be set to the maximum value needed. The weighting of the points will then determine the effective value. I.e. a mass of 2 and a point weight of 40% will give you an effective mass of 0.8.

 
The second scenario requires you to first cache the solution of the item that will not be influenced. Then drag this polygon object into the Include list of the cloth tag of the other object. You can find this list in the Expert tab. This ensures that the linked object will be taken into account for collision and that it has priority.

 

 
Note: This is not usable for rigid collision objects, only objects with a cloth tag can be used here.

 
For more then two items of cloth to interact, the above methods can be used in the same way.
