Baking a Cloth Simulation

While simulating cloth, it sometimes becomes necessary to bake the simulation into PLA (Point Level Animation). Unfortunately, this can't be done directly from Clothilde. But, MOCCA's Cappucino tool will aid in this situation.

 
Step 1: To start this off create a Plane object (Objects=>Primitive=>Plane). In the Object tab of the Attributes Manager input the settings shown. Make the plane editable (Functions=>Make Editable).

 
Switch into Points mode and select the top row of points as shown. The cloth is going to be fixed from these points!

 
Step 2: Add a Cloth Tag to the object(Object Manager: File=>Clothilde Tags=>Cloth); this will give the object cloth-like properties.

 
In the Dresser tab for the Cloth tag, use the Fix Points: Set command to set the selected points in a fixed position. The points should be displayed in a pink color in the viewport.

 
Now in the Forces tab increase the Wind Strength to 0.5. Press play to view the simulation of the cloth.

 
Step 3: Before baking the cloth simulation to PLA, it's a good idea to Cache the simulation. In the Tag tab use the Calculate Cache command to store the simulation in memory.

 
Open the Cappucino dialog by going to Plugins=>MOCCA=>Cappucino. Under the Where section switch Layer to Layer 1.

 
In the What section, enable only PLA so Cappucino will only record the point movement. Also enable Start Realtime at the top of the dialog.

 
Click and hold on one of the axis stems to start Cappucino's recording. Cappucino is not recording movement so slight movement will not affect the keyframes. After the animation plays through once, you can delete the cloth tag. The Timeline will display the keyframes in a PLA sequence.

 
The cloth simulation is now baked. Meaning that the object now looks at keyframes for its movement, as opposed to using Dynamic forces.
